Multimodal Schedule Design for Synchromodal Freight Transport Systems

Abstract: Intermodal freight transport has been discussed for decades as an alternative to unimodal road transport. However, it still does not represent a significant portion of the total freight market. A new and promising possibility to improve the performance of freight systems is the synchromodal design of hinterland transport systems. A cornerstone for synchromodality is an integrated view in the design and operation of intermodal transport. A main benefit of this integrated view is an improved flexibility in mode … Show more

“…Each multimodal chain consists of various companies that have different incentives, resources, and capabilities. The coordination of these actors is considered as one of the most important governance enablers of synchromodal transport [19]. Horizontal information exchange amongst the infrastructure managers and vertical information exchange between the infrastructure managers and the service providers on The stakeholders engaged in the first level provide the necessary infrastructure for the modes to operate.…”

“…Currently, many studies refer to the concept of synchromodal transportation (e.g. Top Sector Logistics 2011; SteadieSeifi et al 2014;Behdani et al 2016), aiming for real-time optimal transportation planning in an integrated hinterland transportation system. Synchromodality can only really provide an advantage if the intermodal planning problem is considered in conjunction with the product portfolio offered to customers (Van Riessen et al 2015b).…”

“…That is, the allocation of containers to available inland services (train, barge or truck). Recently, some studies refer to the concept of synchromodal transportation (Lucassen et al, 2012, SteadiSeafi et al, 2014, Behdani et al, 2014. These studies mention the flexible deployment of modes, the possibility of last minute changes to the transportation plan (switching) and a central network orchestrator that offers integrated transport.…”
