Multimodal Open-Domain Conversations with the Nao Robot

Abstract: In this paper we discuss the design of human-robot interaction focussing especially on social robot communication and multimodal information presentation. As a starting point we use the WikiTalk application, an open-domain conversational system which has been previously developed using a robotics simulator. We describe how it can be implemented on the Nao robot platform, enabling Nao to make informative spoken contributions on a wide range of topics during conversation. Spoken interaction is further combined w… Show more

“…Progress in artificial intelligence and robot technology has made possible service robots and agents for the home as well as office. Furthermore, robots are acquiring both verbal and nonverbal communication functions [63], [64]. Beyond the original scope of this study, the system might be able to be used for understanding communications in mixed humannon-human groups [65], [66].…”

“…DigiSami focuses especially on North Sámi, and sets to collect data, provide tools, and develop technology to enable North Sámi speech-based applications to be developed (Jokinen and Wilcock, 2014a). Moreover, the project aims to encourage community effort for online content creation, and for this, Wikipedia-based applications are supported, such as WikiTalk (Jokinen and Wilcock, 2014b;Wilcock et al, 2016). This is a robot-application which allows the user to interact with a robot concerning information in the Wikipedia articles.…”
