Multimodal α-Glucosidase and α-Amylase Inhibition and Antioxidant Effect of the Aqueous and Methanol Extracts from the Trunk Bark of Ceiba pentandra

Abstract: Postprandial hyperglycemia and oxidative stress are important factors that worsen the health condition of patients with type 2 diabetes. We recently showed that extracts from Ceiba pentandra mitigate hyperglycemia in dexamethasone- and high diet/streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Herein, we evaluated the postprandial regulatory properties and the antioxidant effects of the aqueous (AE) and methanol (ME) extracts from the stem bark of Ceiba pentandra. The phytochemical analysis of AE and ME was performed using th… Show more

“…The inhibitory activity of α -glucosidase by AEPAS was determined via a procedure provided by Nguelefack et al 61 . 1 mg of α-glucosidase was dissolved in a phosphate buffer (100 ml) at a pH of about 6.8 and containing 200 mg of bovine serum albumin (BSA).…”

“…pentandra scavenged the DPPH radicals with an IC 50 value of 0.0716 mg/mL [ 184 ]. The aqueous and methanol stem bark extracts of C. pentandra inhibited superoxide (O 2 • − ) (IC 50 values of 51.81 and 34.26 μg/mL), hydrogen peroxide (44.84 and 1.78 μg/mL), and protein oxidation induced by H 2 O 2 (120.60 and 140.40 μg/mL) [ 168 ].…”

“…The ethanolic bark extract of C. pentandra at 200 mg/kg dose exhibited antihyperglycemic activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats by decreasing the levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, preventing degeneration of liver and pancreas, and increasing serum insulin and liver glycogen content [ 180 ]. The aqueous stem bark extracts of C. pentandra inhibited alpha-amylase and glucosidase with IC 50 values of 6.15 and 76.61 μg/mL, respectively, whereas the methanol extract inhibited alpha-amylase and glucosidase with IC 50 values of 54.52 and 86.49 μg/mL, respectively [ 168 ].…”

“…The International Diabetes Federation estimated that 451 million people were living with diabetes in 2017, and this number could rise to 693 million by 2045, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where the greatest increase is expected to occur [ 1 ]. The postprandial hyperglycemia associated with T2DM causes oxidative stress, which impairs endothelial cell function and eventually causes microvascular and macrovascular complications [ 2 ].…”
