Multimodal analgesia or balanced analgesia: the better choice?

Abstract: The concept of balanced anesthesia was introduced by John S. Lundy in 1926 [1]. He suggested that a balanced application of different agents and techniques could produce the different components of anesthesia such as amnesia, analgesia, motor paralysis, and abolition of autonomic reflexes. Induction of anesthesia with a single agent alone can cause several complications. On the other hand, using a combination of more than one anesthetic drugs and techniques can improve patient safety, reduce the side effects o… Show more

“…A stepwise approach, based on the patients’ somatosensory complaints, is needed including the use of atypical analgesic drugs for neuropathic pain conditions. Pain and other symptoms should be addressed through a multimodal approach [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. However, such approaches are now largely lacking in available national and international guidelines, which is why the summary table was drawn up (see Table 1 ).…”

Do substancji często stosowanych zaliczamy: opioidy, leki znieczulające miejscowo w postaci dożylnej (lidokaina), ketaminę, NLPZ, gabapentynę i pregabalinę, kortykosteroidy oraz deksmetodymidynę [7].…”

“…Corticosteroids are frequently used in PC as an adjuvant therapy for cancer related pain syndromes, which include bone pain, neuropathic pain from infiltration or metastatic compression of neural structures, headache due to increased intracranial pressure, or if the pain is from inflammatory origin (nerve, bone). If the pain is aggravated by tension or muscle spasms, the use of muscle relaxants can play an important role in relieving the pain [83], sedation and anti-cholinergic are present as side effects.…”
