Multimedia Multimetric Map-Aware Routing Protocol to Send Video-Reporting Messages Over VANETs in Smart Cities

Abstract: One of the most important goals of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) in smart cities is the efficient management of accidents, specially to prevent them. Our research lies on a promising smart service, which soon might be available in our cities. After the occurrence of an accident, a vehicle could make a light and short video of the situation and send it through the VANET till reaching an access point in the infrastructure of the city to alert the emergencies service (e.g., 911 or 112). With a video message,… Show more

“…Specifically, in the literature we can find multimetric routing protocols that notably improve GPSR, which just uses the distance as the decision routing metric. For instance, our proposal multimedia multimetric map-aware routing protocol (3MRP) [8] uses five metrics to optimize the selection of the best next forwarding vehicle (see section VIII-A).…”

“…When an accident occurs, a vehicle could transmit a short video about the situation through the VANET and alert the emergencies services or other vehicles in the area. In this context in [10], the proposal was an effective routing protocol to operate video-reporting messages in vehicular ad hoc networks; the proposal provides video-reporting messages over VANETs in smart cities, and is called the multimedia multimetric map-aware routing protocol (3MRP). The proposal included five metrics to improve the selection of the best routing path, distance, density, trajectory, available bandwidth estimation, and MAC losses.…”

“…Other protocols designed for low-latency applications based on topology or position information are presented in [9]. Finally, for reliable QoS routing, there are different approaches to obtain an optimal protocol according to different parameters [10] such as end-to-end delay [11], security, low collision, and interference [12].…”

“…We consider distance to destination, vehicle's velocity, vehicles' trajectory, vehicles' density, available bandwidth and packet losses. The design of the metrics is detailed in [9] and here we will just summarize one of them, the vehicles' density.…”
