Multimaterial photonic crystal fibers

Abstract: One of the main advantages of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is their ability to host novel functional materials in the airholes of the cladding. Here, we demonstrate a unique post-processing method which allows the integration of materials with significantly different thermo-mechanical properties inside the voids of silica PCF. We first present the material properties of silica, As 2 Se 3 and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in terms of their refractive indices and viscosity profile. The latter suggests that the p… Show more

“…The large material index-contrast among the cladding, the core, and the ring region enables a large effective-index separation among the HE l+1,1 or EH l−1,1 mode of the same |l| family, which potentially reduces the modal crosstalk and facilitates stable transmission of OAM modes. This structure design and material choice is feasible, as chalcogenide thin-film fibers have been manufactured in practice [30], [31]. According to the As 2 S 3 material loss [32], the optical loss is several times larger than 0.03 dB/m at 1550 nm.…”

“…From the perspective of fiber manufacturing, the selection of materials and the design of fiber structure are feasible [34], and fibers composed of silica and chalcogenide have been manufactured in practice. The detailed manufacturing process has been described in several papers [35]- [37].…”

“…The large material index contrast leads to sufficient effective refraction index difference between adjacent modes, which enables mode separation and preserves OAM modes purity across the supercontinuum range [22]. It is feasible to fabricate the designed fiber from the material selection and fiber structure perspectives [23], and fibers composed of silica and chalcogenide have been manufactured in practice [24].…”
