Solid waste management gained the highest significant attention globally. In Malaysia, the generation of solid waste has increased 4% approximately year by year and an average from 0.8 kg/cap/day to 1.12 kg/cap/day. This trend is in line with the increasing population density in Malaysia especially in urban areas. The exponential growth of economic, urbanization, demographics and changing lifestyles are the key reasons behind the increase in the generation of solid waste. The objective of this research is to develop a system dynamic model for solid waste management in peninsular Malaysia and analyze the recycle evaluation. This method has an ability to handle a complex system and dynamic behavior over time. The result show that model imitate the real system with the validation less than +10% and -10% of acceptance range. This model can assist the decision maker in making efficient decision. The management of solid waste department may holistically measure the alternative action in cost effective and save time. As a result, the recycle rate in Malaysia relatively low and lack of participation from public. Enforcement and engagement from all parties are needed in order to achieve a sustainable environment in future.

Solid waste management has been recognized as the crucial urban environmental problem in Malaysia. In order to ameliorate waste management, it is essential to know the quantity of waste generated and the elements contributing to the generation of waste. This study was conducted to determine the association between socioeconomic factors and solid waste generation in Kuala Lumpur, to analyse the class of income that contribute the highest contribution of solid waste generation and to propose mitigation plan to local authority in controlling waste production in the study area. In this paper, the socioeconomic factors that lead to waste generation in Kuala Lumpur are presented. A seventeen years (2000-2017) secondary database obtained from the Department of Statistic Malaysia (DOSM), National Solid Waste Management Department (NSWMD) and National Property Information Centre (NAPIC) were statistically analysed by using Chemometric techniques which includes Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). The study revealed that population, household income, GDP per capita, low cost flat, 2-3 storey terraced, town house, 2-3 storey semi-detached and apartment/condominium were positively strong correlated with solid waste generation. PCA analysis indicated that population, household income, GDP per capita, single storey terraced, 2-3 storey terraced, single storey semi-detached, 2-3 storey semi-detached, town house, low cost flat, and condominium/apartment were the most potential contributors to waste generation. MLR revealed that population, GDP per capita, household income, high income class and middle-income class were the significant factor towards solid waste generation in Kuala Lumpur. This study gives new insight on the part of socioeconomic parameter in influencing the production of solid waste.

Solid waste management is considered as one of the complex and dynamics problems worldwide due to rapid population, changing life style, urbanization process towards sustainable development and uncontrollable increment in solid waste generation. An efficient performance of solid waste management is depending on systematic strategic planning. The aim of this paper is to develop an integrated dynamical model to simulate the complexity of solid waste management in Malaysia. System dynamics as one of optimization methodology is applied in order to illustrate the continuous process in solid waste management Malaysia. As a result, an increasing trend of solid waste generation over time. By 2025, it is forecasted that total waste will be more than 15 million tonnes. Based on developed proposed model, the main factor to solid waste generation is population. However, in order to reduce the total solid waste, we cannot simply reduce the population Therefore; further actions are needed in order to reduce the total solid waste generation. The proposed model is capable of assisting the decision maker to determine the effectiveness of solid waste management practices especially in strategies planning and system design improvement.
