ABSTRACT:In this paper, the effectiveness of seismic performance upgrading is studied by adoption of damping devices made of shape memory alloys (SMAs). An axial-type SMA damper is constructed and modeled on the basis of a modified multi-linear one dimensional constitutive model of SMAs. Time history analyses are carried out on typical steel frames with SMA damping devices. Performance parameters for seismic performance upgrading are investigated in consideration of four influence factors, i.e., strength ratio, martensite fraction, length ratio, and ground motion. Dynamic analyses of bare frames and frames with equivalent BRB dampers are also conducted for comparisons. Numerical investigations show that excellent re-centering ability and energy dissipation can be afforded by installing SMA damping devices in structures.

Smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMAs) are recently being used in earthquake engineering applications to control the response of structures. In this paper, a shape-memory alloy damper device made up of austenite wires (e.g. Nickel Titanium wires) is used as a passive energy absorber. NiTi wires are very attractive for passive vibration control as they have a pseudo-elastic property and can sustain large amounts (upto 10% strain) of inelastic deformation. Moreover, in contrast to regular metallic materials they can recover that deformation. The damper device is designed, fabricated and tested. Validity study is made using a thermo-mechanical model of SMA taking into account the residual martensite accumulation irreversibly due to cyclic forward/reverse martensitic transformation. Further an analytical study of a supporting steel structure of dump tanks with and without SMA dampers subjected to design wave earthquake loading is carried out. Performance of the structure with SMA dampers is compared with that of the same structure with yielding dampers.

Summary Innovative self‐centering energy dissipation braces (SCBs) with super‐elastic shape memory alloy wires are designed and tested on a uniaxial MTS 810 hydraulic servo‐controlled fatigue testing machine. This type of SCB is modeled using finite element method and analyzed by ANSYS software. The test and analysis results show that this type of innovative SCB possesses energy dissipation capacity and self‐centering ability. This paper also describes the multistage working mechanism of the SCBs and exhibits the mechanical behaviors of the braces. The hysteretic behavior of steel frame structures with conventional braces, the buckling‐restrained braces, and the SCBs are compared by conducting low‐frequency cyclic loading. Nonlinear dynamic analyses of steel frame structures with the conventional braces, the buckling‐restrained braces, and the SCBs under frequently occurred earthquake, design basis earthquake, and rare earthquake, respectively, are also performed to compare the seismic responses of steel structures with different braces. The seismic behaviors of these frames are investigated by comparing the peak acceleration, the maximum interstory displacement angle, and the maximum base shear. The results show that the innovative SCB possesses excellent energy dissipation capacity as well as self‐centering ability. Additionally, the innovative SCBs can effectively control the seismic response of the steel frame structure.
