Multilevel voltage source inverter with optimised usage of bidirectional switches

Abstract: This study presents a multilevel voltage source inverter that has been designed to reduce circuit complexity by optimising the use of bidirectional switches. The proposed inverter is built by adding an auxiliary circuit comprising an arrangement of bidirectional switches to the three-phase, six-switch, full-bridge configuration. Several bidirectional switches are made to function in the optimised mode in which their operations are divided among the three phases. The presence of the optimised mode considerably … Show more

“…The experimental setup is shown in Figure 5(b), where the Bi-Sw, the load, the power supplies, the PWM generator, and the digital oscilloscope equipped with current and voltage probes are shown. Table 4 shows the comparison of the output voltage values calculated by (1) and measured with an oscilloscope on the resistive load connected to the output of the ac voltage regulator in Figure 5. Figure 9 shows the input voltage waveforms , the output current , and the gate voltage .…”

“…The bidirectional switches (Bi-Sws), also known as fourquadrant switches, can block positive or negative voltages as well as drive currents in any direction [1,2]. At present, their cost is high, since they are manufactured to measure depending on the application.…”

“…For higher output voltage level, work done in [29] extended this topology to accommodate more dc sources. In view of three-phase applications, Jafferi Jamaludin extended the work in [29] to three-phase system, [30]. Therein, the bidirectional switches' usage was optimized following a space vector modulation control approach.…”

“…Generally, due to the complex structure of the multilevel inverters, several studies have been carried out in order to reduce the number of components. For instance, Jamaludin et al [30] proposed the use of bidirectional switches with an auxiliary circuit in order to reduce the complexity of a three-phase full-bridge inverter. A hybrid circuital structure was proposed by Gautam et al [31], in which the number of controlled switches, diodes and DC sources is considerably reduced.…”
