Multilevel Analysis of Dental Caries in Swedish Children and Adolescents in Relation to Socioeconomic Status

Abstract: The objective was to investigate the variability in dental caries experience in Swedish children and adolescents, at two different area levels: dental clinics and SAMS (small areas for market statistics), with respect to multiple individual socioeconomic factors (SES). Records of manifest caries using the DMFT indices (decayed, missing, filled teeth, dependent variables) were collected from electronic dental records for 300,988 individuals aged 3–19 years (97.3% coverage) from the Region Västra Götaland, Swede… Show more

“…Often a combination of SES variables or an index is used and advocated, in order to reflect the accumulation of disadvantage and thus provide a broader and more stable picture than that afforded by single variables 15,44,45 . We combined the socioeconomic variables used in this study in an index for this purpose 8,46 . We also considered possible changes in SES over the study period, rather than investigating only baseline circumstances, which is the standard approach.…”

“…Major strengths of this study are the use of novel statistical methods accounting for dependency in observations within individuals as well as strict characterization of HIV-1 status and use of community controls [21]. Whereas multilevel models are well established in medical research, their application is limited in dentistry [23,28,29]. Previous studies using a multilevel approach have been performed, most commonly, in the field of periodontology [30].…”
