Multilayer Maraging/CoCrNi Composites With Synergistic Strengthening-Toughening Behavior

Abstract: A novel multilayer maraging/CoCrNi composite with good mechanical properties was successfully fabricated by a vacuum hot-rolling and aging treatment. The yield strength, tensile strength, uniform elongation, and fracture elongation reached 1,151, 1,380 MPa, 15.7, and 24% respectively, realizing the aim of synergistic strengthening–toughening by effectively improving the yield strength of the CoCrNi alloy and strain-hardening capacity of the maraging steel. The vacuum state, high rolling reduction ratio, and al… Show more

“…In order to deeply analyze the contribution of each reinforcement, related theoretical calculations were introduced. The yield strength can be calculated according to the following equation [27]: σ 0.2 = σ 0 + ∆σ refin + ∆σ twin (6) where σ 0 is the contribution of the original material to the yield strength; ∆σ refin is the value of grain refining; and ∆σ twin is the value of strain-induced twinning.…”

The unique properties exhibited by high-performance NMMCs are primarily attributed to the interface between the different metallic layers.…”

“…One of the most characteristic cases is that of equiatomic CrCoNi solid solution alloys, that show higher yield strengths than traditional alloys, as well as more complex Cantor CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloys at cryogenic and room temperatures Esfandiarpour et al (2022); Wu et al (2014). Deformation twins (especially at cryogenic temperature) Chen et al (2021a) and larger atomistic mismatch (larger lattice distortion), induced by Cr atoms, are the main explanation for the exceptional behavior of CrCoNi solid solutions Varvenne et al (2016). We propose that the design of new MEAs that have higher strength than CrCoNi, it is imperative to add elements that can induce higher local lattice distortion.…”
