Multifunctions of Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer: A highly nutritious food and a source for bioactive compounds

Abstract: A B S T R A C TA study with Pleurotus sajor-caju was conducted to: evaluate the nutritional and chemical composition of the fruiting bodies; optimize the preparation of bioactive phenolic extracts; and characterize the optimized extract in terms of bioactive compounds and properties. P. sajor-caju revealed an equilibrated nutritional composition with the presence of hydrophilic (sugars and organic acids) and lipophilic (tocopherols and PUFA) compounds. pHydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric and cinnamic acids were identi… Show more

“…Therefore, the compound would not be deemed completely inactive, in keeping with its weak estrogenic activity in mouse bioassays [113] and human breast cancer cell lines [114]. Moreover, the general notion of 4OH as a ligand in complex with proteins should not be surprising, given that it has been docked into human cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) [115], despite negative results in a COX-2 dependent human smooth muscle cell assay [116]. Furthermore, 4OH is found as a bound ligand in a variety of enzymes, including carbonic anhydrase [117], p -hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase [118], and 4-hydroxybenzoate octaprenyltransferase [119].…”

“…Cytotoxicity assay of the fungal fruiting body extract demonstrated strong inhibition against growth of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H460), breast (MCF-7) and cervical (HeLa) carcinoma cells. Pleurotus sajor-caju extract does not display cytotoxicity against non-tumour cells (primary PLP2) even at a test concentration of 400 µg/mL [72]. Ethanol extract of mycelia of the oyster mushroom, P. ostreatus, demonstrated a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.…”

“…Fruiting body extracts of Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer exhibited some extent of antistaphylococcal activity against MSSA and MRSA with a MIC value of 10 mg/mL with the presence of compounds such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid 7, p-Coumaric acid (8) and cinnamic acid (9) [72,73]. Cytotoxicity assay of the fungal fruiting body extract demonstrated strong inhibition against growth of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H460), breast (MCF-7) and cervical (HeLa) carcinoma cells.…”

“…An increase in the ratio of bone resorption to bone formation causes low bone mass and strength, which leads to posseses various biological activities, including antimicroorganisms, antitumor, antioxidant, antihypertension, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammation. According to its various biological activities, many biologically active compounds have also been studied regarding its role on therapeutic applications such as β-glucans, proteoglycan, phenolic acids, terpenes, proteins, and sterols [29]. Extracted Pleurotus sajor-caju β-glucan has a high molecular weight and low water solubility.…”
