Multifunctionality of agriculture: an inquiry into the complementarity between landscape preservation and food security

Abstract: Without support, the levels of agricultural public goods will fall short of the demand in high cost countries like Norway, Finland and Iceland. However, as demonstrated in this paper using Norway as a case, the current support and agricultural activity is far out of proportions from a public goods perspective. Model simulations show that at most 40% of the current support level can be defended by the public good argument. Furthermore, the present support, stimulating high production levels, is badly targeted a… Show more

“…However, the research also provides evidence to measures that extend beyond the three pillars of CSA that may not be climate-related. CSA may include social, institutional and livelihood strategies (see Table 7 (Brunstad et al 2005;Hodbod et al 2016Taylor 2017. For the CSA discourse, integration of social and livelihood functions agricultural systems could provide, coupled with a broader definition of CSA beyond the three pillars, will help strengthens the relevance and importance of the approach from a multifunctional perspective.…”

“…Finally in Brunstad et al (2005) the focus was on the cost complementarities (jointness) between these two public goods, and between public goods and private goods. We discuss the optimal policy when food security and landscape preservation are simultaneously taken into account.…”

“…The model is constructed to perform policy analyses, and has as such been used by the Norwegian Ministry of Finance and the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture. 4 The table is adapted from Brunstad et al (2005) 6 would be at M in panel a of figure 1 below, where the marginal profit from agriculture (MPA) is zero. Several studies have attempted to estimate the willingness to pay for the amenity value of the cultural landscape.…”
