Multifunctional ZnO Nanoparticle: Based Coatings for Cultural Heritage Preventive Conservation

Abstract: Coatings based on nanoparticles embedded in various filmogenic materials are still a hot topic in nanomaterial research, due to the exceptional variety of applications. The chapter present recent progress in synthesis and characterization of hybrid material with ZnO nanoparticles and their use as functional coatings for various substrates. The antibacterial and UV protection efficiency of ZnO nanoparticle-based coatings on paper and stone are discussed, with particular emphasize on the specific requirements fo… Show more

“…Additionally, thanks to their optical, electrical, and photocatalytic features, ZnO NPs are used in several applications, such as chemical sensors, solar cells, and notably, photocatalysis [93]. It has been stated that ZnO reveals antimicrobial activity at the nanoscale [94][95][96][97][98]. Indeed, Mokammel et al (2019) stated that the antibacterial effects of ZnO NPs can be ascribed to their capacity to break down bacterial cell walls and interfere with DNA replication [99].…”

“…Recently, the area of interest dealing with the treatment of monument materials for their preservation from microorganisms' colonization and pollution is shifting into the application of nanotechnology with self-cleaning properties [18]. Heterogeneous photocatalysis using semiconductors such as TiO 2 and ZnO has been considered an interesting method, used extensively to preserve heritage materials [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. The particular activity of these oxides, based on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when they are exposed to UV light, makes them very attractive compounds [40].…”

“…ZnO NPs are well known for their anti-quorum sensing ( Husain et al, 2020 ), broad spectrum antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity ( Mahamuni-Badiger et al, 2020 ). ZnO NPs of different morphologies have been utilized as antibacterial coating materials in textile fibers ( Verbič et al, 2019 ), anticorrosion coating for metals ( Qing et al, 2015 ), protection coatings for heritage buildings ( Cinteză and Tănase, 2020 )and antifouling coatings for dental ( Moradpoor et al, 2021 ) and orthopedic implants ( Memarzadeh et al, 2015 ). Although silver NPs are used to develop antibacterial surfaces of CVCs, reports of limited efficacy ( Antonelli et al, 2012 ) and bacterial resistance against Ag NPs ( Stabryla et al, 2021 ) warrant for better solutions.…”
