Multifunctional tribometer development and performance study of CuCrZr-316L material pair for ITER application

Abstract: Radio-Frequency (RF) contacts are key components on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) antenna, and these components are facing big challenges such as 2 kA operation current load and intensive sliding under up to 250 C in high vacuum. Stainless steel (SS) 316L and CuCrZr are most likely to be applied as base materials for the conductor and the RF contacts louvers. To evaluate the performance of the selected materials, their electrical and tribolog… Show more

“…The electrical performance of the Au-Ni coating was carefully investigated by measurement of the contact resistance (under direct current) between the Au-Ni-coated pin samples and the Rh-coated 316L plates (thickness: ~4.2 µm, surface roughness Sa: 1.9 µm) on a dedicated testbed [39]. The pin and plate samples can accurately represent the louver of the RF contact and the RF conductor to which the RF contact is connected, respectively.…”

“…The coating adherence was evaluated using a CSEM® Micro-Scratch Tester (Rockwell C diamond indenter, tip radius 200 µm) and the effects of thermal ageing were studied. Electrical and tribological tests were performed based on the thermally aged samples on a dedicated tribometer in which ITER RF sliding contact conditions can be mimicked [6]. A 3D optical profiler (SENSOFAR) was used to analyze the worn surfaces after the tribological test.…”
