Multifunctional Polyurethane Composite Foam with Outstanding Anti-impact Capacity for Soft Body Armors

Abstract: Herein, a multifunctional polyurethane (PU) composite foam with a hierarchical structure is fabricated by dip-coating a carbon nanotube/shear-thickening gel (CNT/STG) and spray-coating nano-SiO 2 /STG on PU foam. The prepared nano-SiO 2 / CNT/STG@PU (SCS@PU) composite foam is lightweight, highly compressive, electrically conductive, superhydrophobic, and impact-energy absorptive. As a result, it possesses an excellent sensing ability to compression with a stable response up to 80% strain, an outstanding linear… Show more

“…In addition to vigorous sports motions, delicate facial expression motions (frowning, eye blinking, and cheek bulging) [171,392,393] and ultradelicate motions (phonating and coughing) [88,170,394] can also be detected. The face sensorbased speech recognition system enables private, undisturbed communication, regardless of environmental noise.…”

“…Protective materials are important in personal and industrial production and flexible electronics fields. In general, protective materials have impact and puncture resistances. Impact-resistant materials include soft materials (e.g., foams and gels) and hard materials (e.g., metals, ceramics, and composites), whose impact resistance comes from their buffering energy absorption or high modulus. Puncture-resistant materials are used to protect individuals from sharp instruments. They are usually metallic materials since they have high strength and hardness, but they are heavy with low flexibility .…”

“…With the development of smart wearable devices, protecting garments are also expected to have intelligent applications for sensing impact and monitoring body motion. Conductive STF impregnation and laser direct writing have been the typical technologies for fabricating composites with force or strain-sensing characteristics. Liu and Zhang prepared a novel wearable e-textile constructed with CNT/STF/Kevlar with outstanding protection and electrical conductivity performance that can react to slight human motions and capture stimulus from high-speed impact.…”
