Multifunctional Gold Nanostars for Cancer Theranostics

Abstract: The prevalence of cancer has increasingly become a significant threat to human health and as such, there exists a strong need for developing novel methods for early detection and effective therapy. Nanotheranostics, a combination of diagnostic and therapeutic functions into a single nanoplatform, has great potential to be used for cancer management by allowing detection, real-time tracking, image-guided therapy and therapeutic response monitoring. Gold nanostars (GNS) with tip-enhanced plasmonics have become o… Show more

“…Nanotheranostics is an innovative combination of therapeutic and diagnostic functions in a single multifunctional nano-platform towards pathological conditions including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders (Kundu et al 2019;Luo et al 2020). For example, nanotheranostics demonstrated a great potential for the management of cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS) through enabling detection, image-guided treatment, and estimating therapeutic response (Liu 2018; Ojha and Babita 2018). Recently, theranostic NPs are regarded as innovative tools to promote targeted delivery for different active therapeutic molecules, including drugs and vaccines.…”

“…The unique physicochemical features and surface modifications property of metallic NPs promoted the synthesis of multifunctional NPs (Barabadi et al 2019). For example, gold NPs (AuNPs) and magnetic NPs (MNPs) are the most commonly used nanotheranostics agents due to their outstanding features (Singh and Sahoo 2014;Liu 2018). MNPs could be used either as contrast agents (CAs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or as drug carriers (Singh and Sahoo 2014).…”
