Multifunctional gold coated thermo-sensitive liposomes for multimodal imaging and photo-thermal therapy of breast cancer cells

Abstract: Plasmon resonant gold nanoparticles of various sizes and shapes have been extensively researched for their applications in imaging, drug delivery and photothermal therapy (PTT). However, their ability to degrade after performing the required function is essential for their application in healthcare. When combined with biodegradable liposomes, they appear to have better degradation capabilities. They degrade into smaller particles of around 5 nm that are eligible candidates for renal clearance. Distearoyl phosp… Show more

“…However, current research focuses on co-encapsulating drug and inorganic materials simultaneously in thermosensitive organic carriers to achieve the molecular imaging and photothermal therapy properties of a combinative system (Oh et al, 2014;Gui et al, 2014;Rengan et al, 2014). There are few reports of the pharmaceutical property improvement of combinative DDSs based on their natural merits.…”

“…However, to the best of our knowledge, the therapeutic strategies for TNBC on previous studies are lack of imaging guidance. For photothermal‐chemical combination therapy of TNBC, imaging‐guided therapy has several advantages to improve the therapeutic efficacy 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. First, imaging could provide the information of the tumor's shape, size, location, and relationship with surrounding tissues, which is helpful for determining treatment position and scope.…”

“…Liposomal ICG is reported to have several advantages over free-form ICG such as improved stability in solution [20], prolonged retention in blood circulation [21,22], and enhanced accumulation and retention in tumor [22]. These characteristics suggest the usefulness of the liposomal ICG not only for in vivo NIR fluorescence imaging, but also for cancer detection [23][24][25] and treatment potentially by photo-thermal therapy [26][27][28].…”
