Multielement Composition of Wines and Their Precursors Including Provenance Soil and Their Potentialities As Fingerprints of Wine Origin

Abstract: The influence of the provenance soil and vinification process on the wine multielemental composition was investigated. For this purpose, two different vineyards from the Douro wine district, Portugal, were selected. Monovarietal grapes from a 10 year old vineyard were used to produce a red table wine, in a very modern winery. Polyvarietal grapes from a 60-70 year old vineyard were used to produce a red fortified wine, similar to Port, through a traditional vinification process. The multielement compositions (A… Show more

“…During the wine making process, red wine is fermented with the grape skins, while white wine is pressed to remove the grape skins prior to fermentation, a process that may impact heavy metal content in wine (Almeida and Vasconcelos 2003). Once stratified by wine type, white wine had a higher concentration of Pb than red wine.…”

“…within a country), the potential for finding unequivocal discrimination are more complicated, and require to consider an investigation of the content of other elements, at trace concentrations, and the influences of production and storage practices (Jakubowski et al, 1999;Almeida et al, 2002;Almeida and Vasconcelos, 2003;Perez-Magarino et al, 2004). Moreover, an increase in the number of samples analyzed could be useful to improve the quality of the discrimination.…”

“…The elemental profile of wine may be affected by several factors such as agricultural practices, environmental contamination, climatic change and also the winemaking process, which affects the wine elements content (Almeida and Vasconcelos, 2003).…”

“…The ability to differentiate wines by regions through their elemental patterns suggests that elements are mainly regulated by their migration from rock to soil and from vineyard soil to grapes. Elements are taken up by the roots passing to the grapes in the same isotopic proportions as they occur in the soil (Almeida and Vasconcelos, 2003).…”
