Multidrug and Mupirocin Resistance in Environmental Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Isolates from Homes of People Diagnosed with Community-Onset MRSA Infection

Abstract: Patients with community-onset methicillin-resistant (CO-MRSA) infections contribute to MRSA contamination of the home environment, and may be re-exposed to MRSA strains from this reservoir. This study evaluates One Health risk factors that focus on the relationship between humans, animals and the environment for increased prevalence of multiple antimicrobial resistant MRSA in the home environment. During a trial of patients with CO-MRSA infection, MRSA was isolated from the household environment at baseline an… Show more

“…Clindamycin therapy was not significantly associated with selection of AMR. Studies have reported that people with skin and soft tissue infections, treated with CD, had earlier clearance of MRSA mucosal/skin carriage and were less likely to have persistent MRSA colonization; treatment also was found to be protective against MDR MRSA environmental contamination . Clindamycin was, however, a significant risk factor for reduced CoPS immediately after and at one month post‐treatment in the present study.…”

“…Additionally, household companion animals can carry S. aureus and may contribute to S. aureus household transmission [7,14]. Studies to date [9,12,13,15,16] have been limited by examining only a subset of household members, discounting socioeconomic status, sampling a small number of surfaces, or disregarding pet colonization.…”

“…H ealthy skin provides a unique ecological environment and immunological barrier against pathogenic microorganisms, especially Staphylococcus aureus, which is the main cause of skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) (1,2). Keratinocytes are the major cell type in the epidermis and actively participate in and orchestrate the innate immune response of the skin (3).…”
