Multidiscipline Applications of Triboelectric Nanogenerators for the Intelligent Era of Internet of Things

Abstract: In the era of 5G and the Internet of things (IoTs), various human–computer interaction systems based on the integration of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and IoTs technologies demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable and self-powered functional systems. The rapid development of intelligent applications of IoTs based on TENGs mainly relies on supplying the harvested mechanical energy from surroundings and implementing active sensing, which have greatly changed the way of human production and daily life.… Show more

“…With the development of the world, the understanding of triboelectrification is deepening, and the mechanism of electrostatic induction has been gradually proposed [ 36 ]. Triboelectrification (TE) and contact electrification (CE) are natural physical phenomena and we generally consider TE as CE [ 34 ].…”

“…Their polarities depend entirely on the direction of electron flow during contact (which depends on the polarity of the CPD of the two contacting materials) [ 41 ]. This process of accumulating charge on the surface of an insulator is known as contact electrification [ 36 ].…”

“…When the contact state changes alternately, electrons flow into and out of the external circuit repeatedly, resulting in a continuous alternating current (AC) output. [ 38 ] And for the freestanding mode, a dielectric plate and two metal plates are stacked face to face, forming two triboelectric pairs. The two metal plates also serve as two electrodes.…”

“…The C–S mode is applicable to the vertical C–S (VCS) movement in a cycle [ 37 ] and beneficial for energy harvesting. [ 38 ] As for the freestanding mode, because of the free layer, more mechanical motion types can be accepted.…”

“…[ 10 ] Among the diversified applications, self‐powered sensors and systems have attracted intensive attention and extended to interdisciplinarity research fields due to their small volume, high sensitivity, good stability, and most importantly, no external power supply (i.e., the as‐named “self‐powered”). [ 11–14 ] Relying on the working mechanism of TENG, the developed triboelectric sensors have exhibited great significance in the sensing area including but not limited to multifunctional sensors, [ 15–17 ] human‐machine interaction, [ 18,19 ] energy‐autonomous modules, [ 20 ] mechanologics, [ 21 ] and interactive neuromorphic devices. [ 22–26 ] Notably, based on the advantages of no power consumption, structural versatility, and facile designability, triboelectric sensors are ready to be fabricated on demand and distributed to the designated positions, which may exhibit more preferential priorities and application prospects for intelligent industry.…”
