Multidisciplinary management of spinal aneurysmal bone cysts: A single-center experience

Abstract: Objective The management of spinal aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) is complex and often requires multimodality therapy, including surgical intervention to stabilize the axial skeleton, and avoid neurologic injury or death. With en bloc resection, ABCs have a recurrence rate of 12%, which increases to >50% with subtotal resection. The use of doxycycline sclerotherapy has been reported to reduce the recurrence rate of non-spinal ABCs to 5% at >24 month follow-up. We … Show more

“…Modified Neer scores of treatment outcomes for all 14 patients are in Table 1 . The interrater reliability showed moderate agreement (κ=0.55) [ 22 ]. Of note, all four interrater scoring discrepancies arose between a score of 1 versus 2, or 3 versus 4.…”

“…Approximately 70% of ABCs are reported to be primary lesions, while 30% are thought to be secondary to associated pathologies [ 5 ]. In approximately 75% of cases there is a balanced chromosomal translocation with involvement of the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 6 ( USP6 ) gene on chromosome 17p13 [ 4 , 22 ]. This translocation event increases TRE17 production, which increases matrix metallopeptidase (MMP)-9 and MMP-10 activity [ 4 ].…”
