Purpose The emergence of Education 2.0 enabled technology-enhanced learning, necessitating new pedagogical approaches, while e-learning has evolved into an instrumental pedagogy of collaboration through affordances of social media. Social learning networks and ubiquitous learning enabled individual and group learning through social engagement and social distribution of knowledge. Nevertheless, these developments have not been supported with extensive studies focusing on quantifying the impact of technology-enhanced learning on students’ progress and achievement. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a quantitative overview of Facebook’s influence on students’ progress can be incorporated in a proposed e-moderation model of teaching and learning. Design/methodology/approach The approach is based on extending Salmon’s (2003) e-moderation model, which provides an emphasis on the theoretical perspectives that support socially situated learning environments of social networks such as Facebook. The findings revealed that students’ grades were positively influenced by the complementary use of Facebook on their courses of study. Findings The use of a social learning network also triggered a significant increase in student participation in learning activities delivered over Facebook. Research limitations/implications The main research limitations were due to the fact that a single social network was chosen for conducting the experiments. Furthermore, the investigation was narrowed down to a selected range of sessions offered to college and university students as part of their course. Originality/value The paper’s contribution is twofold, as it offers an original set of guidelines for conducting social learning network experiments and provides valuable quantifiable findings on the educational value of such networks.

The measurement of poverty is an essential instrument for comprehending the socio-economic well-being of a nation’s population and devising effective strategies to mitigate it. Currently, zakat institutions in Malaysia rely on the Had Kifayah (HAK) method to categorise an individual's poverty status by classifying their asnaf status. On a larger scale, the establishment of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) presents an alternative method for assessing poverty, emphasising the non-monetary dimensions of deprivation that individuals may experience. This study conducts a comparative analysis of two distinct poverty measurement frameworks, namely, HAK and the MPI to assess their applicability and effectiveness in capturing the multifaceted nature of poverty in Malaysia. The study employed an extensive literature review and comparative analysis of the two different poverty measurement tools. The findings of this study contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding the choice of poverty measurement tools in Malaysia. It sheds light on the advantages and shortcomings of both Had Kifayah and the MPI in capturing the complex and evolving nature of poverty in the country. The study recommends that zakat institutions complement the HAK method by incorporating the MPI, which can effectively measure the degree of deprivation that an asnaf may encounter.

The concept of poverty is commonly acknowledged to be intricate and multifaceted. The narrow approach to defining poverty, which is centered on a monetary approach, ignores other key elements such as access to education, access to healthcare, type of home, and others that are relevant and can affect quality of life. It is vital for the policymaker to construct a holistic measure of poverty that incorporates both material and non-material areas of deprivation. From an Islamic perspective, the zakat institution plays a critical role in identifying the poor and destitute asnaf and distributing the zakat funds to the qualified recipients. Presently, zakat institutions are solely relying on the Had Kifayah method (HAK), which is a monetary-based approach to identifying the poor and destitute asnaf status and delivering zakat assistance. Thus, the goal of this study is to establish a multidimensional poverty measurement, called the Zakat Multidimensional Poverty Index (ZMPI) that aims to capture different deprivation areas that asnaf experience. An extensive analysis of the past studies, complemented by a semi-structured interview session was conducted to construct and validate the ZMPI. The proposed ZMPI integrates five dimensions, namely religion, health, education, living standards and income and represented by a total of eighteen indicators.
