The current study was conducted with sampling of eighty-four groundwater sample which was used for analyzing various physico- chemical properties in groundwater to assess the status of irrigation water quality and their hydro-geochemistry.For this purpose, different ionic concentration pH, EC, TDS, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl−, SO42−, CO32− and HCO3− were determine in groundwater and used to calculate the various irrigation water quality parameters like SAR, Na %, RSC, MHR, KR, PI%, PS and RSBC. The groundwater sample pH was ranged from 7.9 to 9.3 with having electrical conductivity of 90 µS/cm to 2000 µS/cm. Among the all-sampled groundwater 2.38%, 1.19%, 5.95%, 16.67%, and 2.38% water samples were unsuitable for irrigation water due to having high loading of PI, KR, MHR, RSC and PS value, respectively. The ionic concentration orders werefound in terms of cations Ca2+> Na+> Mg2+> K+ and anions HCO3−> Cl−> SO42−in groundwater. The piper trilinear diagram suggested Ca (Mg)- HCO3−, Ca (Mg)-Cl− and mixed type water was dominated in the study area. The Gibbs and other bivariate plot were indicated that the silicate weathering and ion exchange phenomenafrom rock water interaction was mainly responsible for the different ion’s sources in groundwater instead of evaporite and carbonate dissolutions.

Groundwater resources are the main sources of water used to supply drinking water to the population of the Ouémé Delta via the Continental Terminal aquifer. Urbanization, population growth, and agricultural and industrial activities have resulted in a deterioration in the quality of these resources. To assess the quality of the delta's groundwater and its suitability for human consumption and irrigation, a total of fourteen ( 14) physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in some forty existing water points between September 2020 and March 2021, using standard water analysis techniques. The values obtained were compared with the potability standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Republic of Benin and were subjected to statistical analysis (principal component analysis (PCA)). In addition, methods for determining the suitability of water for irrigation were used. The results showed that the waters are acidic to slightly neutral and influenced by ambient temperature. In addition, the waters are moderately mineralized, with conductivities (24 -1205 µS/cm) in line with WHO standards. A comparison of the analytical results of the WHO (2017) and Benin (2001) standards indicates that the majority of the waters studied are of good quality for all the chemical parameters considered. Nevertheless, some samples show levels of nitrates (21%), potassium (14% to 16%), calcium (13%), ammonium (12%), nitrites (8%) and bicarbonates (10%) over their respective standards. The Wilcox and Riverside diagrams indicate that the majority of waters (90%) have excellent suitability for irrigation and no negative effect on soil fertilization.

Reports have shown that potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in air, water, and soil systems expose humans to carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks. In southeastern Nigeria, works that have used data-driven algorithms in predicting PTEs in groundwater are scarce. In addition, only a few works have simulated water quality indices using machine learning modelling methods in the region. Therefore, in this study, physicochemical analyses were carried out on groundwater samples in southeastern Nigeria. The laboratory results were used to compute two water quality indices: pollution index of groundwater (PIG) and the water pollution index (WPI), to ascertain groundwater quality. In addition, the physicochemical parameters served as input variables for multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modelling and prediction of Cr, Fe, Ni, NO 3 − , Pb, Zn, WPI, and PIG. The results of WPI and PIG computation showed that about 30–35% of the groundwater samples were unsuitable for human consumption, whereas 65–70% of the samples were deemed suitable. The insights from the PIG and WPI model also revealed that lead (Pb) was the most influential PTE that degraded the quality of groundwater resources in the research area. The findings of the MLR and ANN models indicated strong positive prediction accuracies ( R 2 = 0.856–1.000) with low modeling errors. The predictive MLR and ANN models of the PIG and WPI generally outperformed those of the PTEs. The models produced in this study predicted the PTEs better compared to previous studies. Thus, this work provides insights into effective water sustainability, management, and protection.
