Multidimensional Analysis of Conflict Mediator Style

Abstract: Th is study explores mediator stylistic variations in a sample of professional and novice mediators. Participants mediated the same simulated confl ict and reported on their in-session thinking using a stimulated recall procedure. Mediators described themselves as stylistically eclectic, but this was not borne out by observational data. Multidimensional scaling identifi ed two dimensions underlying mediator performance: stylistic orientation (relational versus settlement oriented) and level of empathic attunem… Show more

“…The facilitative style is predominant, followed by the transformative and the evaluative styles. This distribution seems to contradict anecdotal experience, according to which most mediations are evaluative rather than transformative (Barr ), as well as the literature which established the prevalence of goal‐oriented mediators over relationship‐oriented mediators (Kressel et al ). We found no significant differences with respect to the characteristics of respondents, since gender (χ 2 = 3.91, p = .429) and mediation experience (χ 2 = 18.11, p = .441) did not affect the mediation style (see Table ).…”

“…As Kressel acknowledges, academic research about mediation has not commonly reached or felt relevant to practitioners, making it a challenge for researchers to support active mediators (Kressel, 1997). Recent studies by Kressel have begun to explore mediator strategies through a reflective practice approach and draw out mediator motivations that might at first reside on a subconscious level (Kressel, 2013;Kressel & Gadlin, 2009;Kressel, Henderson, Reich, & Cohen, 2012). Lang and Taylor's (2000) book, The Making of a Mediator, was one of the first introductions of reflective practice tailored specifically for practitioners rather than academic readers.…”
