Multidetector CT Study of Gallbladder Stones in a Wrapped Egyptian Mummy

Abstract: A whole-body examination was performed with multidetector computed tomography (CT) of a completely wrapped Egyptian mummy from the collection at the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy. The mummy dates from the Eighteenth Dynasty. Although embalmment of the deceased man should have included evisceration in accordance with his social rank, no canopic jars containing internal organs had been found at the discovery of his tomb, and at CT, all the organs were found to have desiccated inside the body. “…This approached aimed to maximise information gained while minimising the impact on the invaluable mummies of Kha and Merit. Both mummies had been previously subjected to conventional X-rays in 1966 [ 34 , 35 ] and Multidectector Computed Tomography (MDTC) in 2001 [ 29 , 36 ]. The integral 2001 CT scan dataset of images is not publicly accessible.…”

“…During the "SicMum" project, 10 mummies were examined inside the Capuchin Catacombs by using a portable direct radiography unit. The primary goal of the paleoradiologic analyses was to assess skeletal abnormalities (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). The radiographic studies also enabled (a) assessment of the state of preservation of the catacomb mummies, especially the condition of the internal organs, and (b) determination of anthropogenic mummification methods in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Sicily.…”
