Multidetector computed tomographic angiography of the cardiovascular system

Abstract: The introduction of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is considered a dramatic development in CT imaging that has direct implication in the imaging of various systems, in particular the cardiovascular system. The advantages of MDCT are an enormous increase in imaging acquisition speed, more coverage of the patient, and high spatial resolution. This article reviews the recent developments in CT angiography and discusses the clinical application relevant to diagnosis and endovascular treatment of cardiova… Show more

“…Approaches like modulation of automatic tube current, increasing the pitch of helical scanning, reducing the tube voltage, reconstructive methods like iterative reconstruction were used. 26,27,28 In our study, we incorporated the use of AIDR reconstructions and automatic modulation of tube current to reduce the patient radiation dose. Thus to summarize, we came across very few studies describing about the association in between renal vascular variations and gender.…”

“…4 The high cost, and procedure-related morbidity and mortality associated with coronary angiography have motivated the search for alternatives to this invasive procedure. 20 In an article published by Goldberg in 1990, CT and magnetic resonance (MR) were not widely used. It was reported to be limited by prolonged imaging time, slice thickness, radiation and cost.…”

“…Multidetector computed tomography (which includes computed tomography angiography) represents a relatively new, relatively noninvasive method of assessing the coronary arteries and has the capacity to identify the presence of early CAD (o50% lumen obstruction). 37 Multidetector computed tomography reports a coronary calcium score, which incorporates the size and density of all calcium deposits in atherosclerotic plaques throughout the coronary vasculature and predicts cardiac events. Using multidetector computed tomography, Jackson and Padley 23 reported an elevated coronary calcium score (450) in 11 out of 20 men with ED and without cardiac symptoms; only two of them had an abnormal exercise electrocardiography stress test.…”
