Multicriteria Evaluation of Tourism Potential in the Central Highlands of Vietnam: Combining Geographic Information System (GIS), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA)

Abstract: Tourism potential provides an indication for the tourism development opportunities of regions and sites. This paper deals with a multicriteria evaluation of the tourism potential in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The study area is located in the Southeast Asian monsoon tropical climatic zone, and offers both natural and cultural tourism resources. “…After the development of the monographs in the research area, we identified and selected the localities/villages with the highest potential for rural heritage trademark creation and capitalization. In addition to the components mentioned by Simkova in [ 87 ], we selected the accessibility level as the evaluation criteria (also studied by [ 90 ]), i.e. the existence of additional facilities—accommodation, gastronomic tradition, tourist routes, specific cultural events or other tourist activities (also studied by [ 91 , 92 ]).…”

“…Different areas have different features that can affect ecotourism activities and management, so alternative approaches should be used to assess ecotourism potential (Yan et al, 2017). Various methods can be used to plan and manage ecotourism (Hoang et al, 2018;Sahani, 2019). In this study, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis and the DPSIR (driving forces, pressures, states, impacts, and responses) framework were adopted to perform an assessment of a mangrove ecotourism area.…”
