Multicriteria Ammonia Plant Assessment for the Advanced Process Control Implementation

Abstract: Rehabilitation of control systems or implementation of Advanced Process Control (APC) in any large scale industrial installation poses several challenges. First of all, the implementation process has to meet stringent safety regulations. Moreover, it has to minimize normal production violation. All human, technology and control system risks need to be identified and a mitigation plan has to be prepared. Once the implementation limitations are fulfilled the installation requires to be prepared. The plant needs … Show more

“…The utilization of robust statistics is just straightforward, as they form the natural extension of the statistical scale measures (variance and standard deviation) in case o outliers [25], which occur frequently in real-life applications [26]. With their use, we are not biasing our assessment by anomalies or erroneous records.…”

“…The plant is equipped with a modern control system that uses a hierarchical advanced process control strategy with a basic layer utilizing PID control algorithms, which are supervised using model predictive control [46]. All PID loops are well-tuned and maintained.…”

“…Control performance depends on the quality of the used Instrumentation and Control (I&C) infrastructure (i.e. sensors, control system hardware and actuators) using the Distributed Control System (DCS) originally designed for process plants (Araujo & Skogestad, 2008;Borikar, 2018;Dziuba et al, 2020). The whole process I&C diagram is as shown in Figure 8.…”
