The gold abundance in basic rocks, which normally varies between 0.5 and 5 ppb, has served as a very important indicator in many geoscience studies, including those focused on the planetary differentiation, redistribution of elements during the crustal process, and ore genesis. However, because gold is a monoisotopic element that exhibits a nugget effect, it is very difficult to quantify its ultra-low levels in rocks, which significantly limits our understanding of the origin of gold and its circulation between the Earth crust, mantle, and core. In this work, we summarize various sample digestion and combined preconcentration methods for the determination of gold amounts in rocks. They include fire assay, fire assay combined with Te coprecipitation and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) or laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, fusion combined with Te coprecipitation and anion exchange resins, dry chlorination, wet acid digestion combined with precipitation, ion exchange resins, solvent extraction, polyurethane foam, extraction chromatography, novel solid adsorbents, and direct determination by INAA. In addition, the faced challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed.

Recovering platinum group metals from secondary resources is crucial to meet the growing demand for high‐tech applications. Various techniques have been explored, and adsorption using porous materials has emerged as a promising technology due to its efficient performance and environmental beingness. However, the challenge lies in effectively recovering and separating individual PGMs given their similar chemical properties. Herein, we present a breakthrough approach by sophisticatedly tailoring the coordination micro‐environment in a series of aminopyridine‐based porous organic polymers, which enables the creation of platinum‐specific nanotraps for efficient separation of binary PGMs (platinum/palladium). The newly synthesized POP‐o2NH2‐Py demonstrated record uptakes and selectivity towards platinum over palladium, with the amino groups adjacent to the pyridine moieties being vital in improving platinum binding performance. Further breakthrough experiments underlined its remarkable ability to separate platinum and palladium. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that POP‐o2NH2‐Py offers a more favorable coordination fashion to platinum ions compared to palladium ions owing to the greater interaction between N and Pt4+ and stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino groups and four coordinating chlorines at platinum. These findings underscore the importance of fine‐tuning the coordination micro‐environment of nanotraps through subtle modifications that can greatly enhance the selectivity towards the desired metal ions.This article is protected by copyright. In this paper, the covalent organic polymer of enaminone was modified by thiourea, and the covalent organic polymer of thiourea (CTOP) was synthesized by simple solvothermal method. At 25 ℃, the adsorption capacity of the polymer for trivalent gold ion is 2372.7 mg/g. In the mixed aqueous solution of divalent cadmium ion, trivalent gold ion, divalent copper ion, divalent cobalt ion and divalent nickel ion, CTOP can only adsorb trivalent gold ion, which indicates that CTOP has high selective adsorption performance for trivalent gold ion. In addition, CTOP material still maintains high adsorption performance after five adsorption cycles, which proves that the adsorption material has good reusability. According to the experimental results of adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics, the adsorption process of CTOP for trivalent gold ions conforms to the quasi second order adsorption model and Langmuir adsorption model, that is, the adsorption process of CTOP for trivalent gold ions is single-layer chemical adsorption. CTOP not only has strong adsorption and selectivity to Au (Ⅲ), but also has good reusability. Therefore, it is an ideal environmental functional material, which can be used to separate and enrich trivalent gold ions in wastewater.
