Multicolor mechanochromism of a multinetwork elastomer that can distinguish between low and high stress

Abstract: Mechanochromic polymers (MCPs), which response to mechanical stimuli by optical signal changing, are regarded to apply in smart materials such as force sensors. Although rapid progress in the MCPs have...

“…The force sensitivity of the elastomer was enhanced by pre-stretching the first network during multiple swelling polymerisations. 63 An applied tensile strength of low intensity ( i.e. , 2 MPa) induced a deformation of the first AMA network, and an increase in the applied strength affected both the pre-stretched first network and the coiled second network for RH activation.…”

“…In another work, multi‐color‐changing was realized by introducing various mechanochromophores into different networks of a multinetwork system, where an anthracene‐maleimide adduct was introduced into the first‐network while Rh was cross‐linked in the second‐network. [ 200 ] Upon stretching, the material showed blue fluorescence and further to red‐violet with increasing tensile stress. This was reported to be the result of the anthracene derivative forming initially from anthracene‐maleimide adduct dissociation prior to Rh activation in the ring‐open form, with blue fluorescence and red fluorescence generated for the former and latter, respectively.…”
