Multiclass Determination of Sunscreen Chemicals in Water Samples by Liquid Chromatography−Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: A novel analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) for the determination of UV sunscreen agents in the water environment is presented. After a thorough investigation of SPE and LC-MS/MS conditions, it permits the enrichment and determination of nine of these compounds in a single methodology, including three very polar sulfonates (e.g., 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, PBSA) and six other less polar com… Show more

“…removal efficiency of benzophenone-3 ranging from 28−30% to 68−96%. However, as typical wastewater treatment usually lacks biological treatment, overall efficiency of the reduction of the presence of these compounds in the wastewater is reduced [144].…”

“…When used, PCPs may be absorbed by the body and excreted or washed off after their application (Tolls and Berger, 2009). They and their metabolites end up in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) (Rodil et al, 2008), where are partially eliminated and retained in the sludge, but an important fraction of them may be released into the aquatic environment through the effluents (Molins-Delgado, 2015a). Even though pollutants are commonly present at low concentration levels, the concern about the adverse effects of a chronic exposure to them is rising.…”

“…Cosmetic science is a practical science dedicated to producing safe and e ective cosmetic products and makes extensive use of mass spectrometry (MS) for the analysis of product ingredients 1) and biological samples 2) (typically skin specimens). e former o en involves quality control and stability testing in the product-development cycle, and the latter involves the study of skin biology and transdermal drug delivery.…”
