Multichannel Electrogastrography (EGG) in Normal Subjects: A Multicenter Study

Abstract: The aim of this study was to record gastric myoelectric activity using multichannel electrogastrography (EGG) and to determine if there are differences due to age, gender, body mass, and study location. In 61 normal subjects from four centers, fasting multichannel EGG was recorded for 1 h, followed by two 1-h postprandial recordings after a test meal. Variables assessed included dominant frequency (DF) and its power, percentage time in 2- to 4-cpm frequency, and percentage slow-wave coupling (%SWC). There were… Show more

“…An overall spectrum analysis was performed on each of the two main 30-minute segments (before and after fentanyl, respectively) of the selected channel using the entire time-domain EGG signal (157). Sequential sets of measurement data for 256s with an overlap of 196s were analyzed using fast Fourier transforms and a…”

“…Electrogastrography evolves, however, still further. Introduction and validation of the methodology of recording and analysing a multichannel electrogastrogram (Chen et al, 1999;Liang, 2005;Lin and Chen, 2001;McNearney et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2003) was followed soon by a proposal of normal ranges of electrogastrographic parameters designed as quantitative descriptors of the spread of slow waves throughout the stomach, such as: the (A)PSWC = (average) percentage of slow-wave coupling, the MDFD = maximum dominant frequency difference, the SDPD = spatial dominant power difference (Medtronic A/S, 2002;Simonian et al, 2004aSimonian et al, , 2004b. The multichannel variety of electrogastrography remains, however, a novelty and huge research work still has to be done until its potential advantages over the 'classical' single channel approach will have ultimately and unequivocally been proven.…”
