“…In another case of oral LSA, the efficacy of topical corticosteroids was insufficient, so grafting treatment was performed to restore gingival health 3 . There have been several case reports of successfully treating anogenital LSA with topical tacrolimus 9 . Furthermore, in a report of vulval LSA, 1% pimecrolimus cream was applied twice daily for 3 months, resulting in complete remission within 6 weeks 10 .…”

“…It reduces antigen presentation and T-cell activation by inhibiting the calcineurin pathway. Moreover, tacrolimus affects other cell types involved in pruritus and inflammation by preventing the cascade of immune and inflammatory signals 9 . Pimecrolimus has a similar mode of action to that of tacrolimus but is more selective and may be better tolerated than topical tacrolimus due to less local irritation.…”

“…47 In 2006, a multicentre research group released the results of their phase II trial to assess the safety and efficacy of tacrolimus ointment 0.1% for the treatment of LS. 48 They had 84 patients (49 women, 32 men and three girls) aged between 5 and 85 years with longstanding, active LS, who were treated with topical tacrolimus ointment 0.1% twice daily. Clearance of active LS was reached by 43% of patients at 24 weeks of treatment and partial resolution was reached in a further 34% of patients.…”
