Multicenter study of noninvasive radiofrequency for periorbital tissue tightening

Abstract: A single treatment with this RF tissue tightening (RFTT) device produces objective and subjective reductions in periorbital wrinkles, measurable changes in brow position, and acceptable epidermal safety. These changes were indicative of a thermally induced early tissue-tightening effect followed by additional tightening over a time course consistent with a thermal wound healing response.

“…Satisfaction was 36% in patients treated in all three areas compared to 25% in patients treated in fewer areas. Fitzpatrick et al [3] performed periorbital tissue tightening by RF in 86 patients. Fitzpatrick wrinkle score improvement (1 point or more) occurred in 83.2% of periorbital areas treated, improvement was observed in 28.9% of areas treated, and half of treated patients reported satisfaction with wrinkle reduction.…”

“…The first noninvasive device for skin tightening took advantage of the heat generated in tissue by radiofrequency (RF) energy [2][3][4]. Specifically, RF energy heats hydrodermal collagen while the skin is cooled, promoting both collagen remodeling [5] and skin tightening [6].…”

“…The clinical results of nonablative RF anti wrinkle effects were first reported in the periorbital area [3]. Fitzpatrick and his colleagues demonstrated clinical improvement in periorbital rhytides in 80% of subjects.…”

“…High frequency radiofrequency has been used in cosmetic medicine for the treatment of facial wrinkles [10,12], and naso-labial creases [11,13,14], in order to improve the laxity of the neck [11,15] and to raise eyelids [8,16]. Although a range of clinical studies on humans into the effects of this treatment exist, very few are aimed at understanding its effects on a microscopic level.…”
