Multicenter clinical experience with large core soft tissue biopsy without vacuum assistance

Abstract: The increasing interest in accurate pretreatment diagnosis of solid tumours by morphology, immunohistochemistry, genetics and molecular biology requires clinicians to obtain undamaged large core biopsies. Simultaneously, medical imaging and surgery give priority to minimal tissue injury, affordable technology and optimal patient compliance. A new large core soft tissue biopsy device has been developed to meet the above criteria. After intensive preclinical testing, 30 patients gave informed consent and 26 unde… Show more

“…Newer methods such as direct frontal and full core needles with a helicoidal receiving element make a substantial decrease in the costs possible without loss in quality and patient comfort. In addition they address several other conceptual problems of the VABs (Rotenberg et al, 2004;Polkowski, 2007). It can be expected that the macrobiopsies will be possible for a fraction of the actual costs and figures of less than 10 USD per procedure will come within reach.…”

“…New biopsy research should always include cell displacement in their evaluation. Fortunately, new innovative biopsy probes are designed to create minimal disruption of normal and malignant cells during the procedure (Rotenberg et al, 2004).…”

“…Device navigation is under complete control of the operator. The clinical usefulness of direct and frontal biopsy (Spirotome, Coramate) has been addressed in several previous publications [10,11,12]. This paper describes a single institute's clinical results of microcalcification assessment using the Spirotome 10 Gauge.…”
