Multicenter clinical comparison of resincontaining bottles with standard aerobic and Anaerobic bottles for culture of microorganisms from blood

Abstract: In a study comparing the Bactec 9240 (Plus Aerobic/F and Anaerobic/F bottles, containing resins; Becton Dickinson, USA) and the Vital (standard aerobic and anaerobic bottles, with no additives; bioMérieux, France) blood culture systems, 6456 sets of four bottles of 9660 blood cultures submitted were evaluated. There were 531 clinically significant isolates from 795 positive blood cultures. Of the 531 positive blood cultures, 355 were positive in both systems, 141 with the Bactec 9240 alone, and 30 with the Vit… Show more

“…The superior recovery from Plus Anaerobic/F bottles parallels that reported for other blood culture bottles containing resins or similar additives (2,9,10,18,22,24). In controlled clinical trials these additives have been shown to improve microbial recovery, particularly for staphylococci (10,20,24,25,26,28,29).…”

“…The false-negative rate was found as 0.1% in our study. The false-negative rate was reported to be 0.12% by using BACTEC 9240 in the research of Lelievre et al (7). The low rate of false positives and negatives in our laboratory, together with the routine confirmation of results by microscopy and cultures, prevents many of the complications that may arise in practice.…”

“…Bactec PAF bottles were chosen for comparison with MICF bottles, because they contain a standard medium for the detection of bacterial and fungal pathogens not specifically adapted to fungi and include resins, which can bind and inactivate antifungal agents and other drugs. Several investigations demonstrated that Bactec PAF bottles yielded better results for detecting bacteremia in patients undergoing pharmacotherapy, indicating that the resins have an effect on the inactivation of potential inhibitors of microbiological pathogen growth (20,21).…”
