Abstract-Recent results have elucidated the benefits of using improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) as compared to conventional proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) in terms of achievable rate for interference-limited conditions. This paper exploits majorization theory tools to formally quantify the gains of IGS along with widely linear transceivers for MIMO systems in interferencelimited scenarios. The MIMO point-to-point channel with interference (P2P-I) is analyzed, assuming that received interference can be either proper or improper, and we demonstrate that the use of the optimal IGS when received interference is improper strictly outperforms (in terms of achievable rate and mean square error) the use of the optimal PGS when interference is proper. Then, these results are extended to two practical situations. First, the MIMO Z-interference channel (Z-IC) is investigated, where a trade-off arises: with IGS we could increase the achievable rate of the interfered user while gracefully degrading the rate of the non-interfered user. Second, these concepts are applied to a two-tier heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) where macrocells and smallcells coexist and multiple MIMO Z-IC appear.Index Terms-Improper Gaussian signaling, widely linear processing, majorization theory, MIMO point-to-point channel with interference, MIMO Z-interference channel, heterogeneous cellular networks.

Abstract-Almost Blank Subframes (ABS) have been defined in LTE as a means to coordinate transmissions in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), composed of macro and micro eNodeBs: the macro issues ABS periods, and refrains from transmitting during ABSs, thus creating interference-free subframes for the micros. Micros report their capacity demands to the macro via the X2 interface, and the latter provisions the ABS period accordingly. Existing algorithms for ABS provisioning usually share resources proportionally among HetNet nodes in a long-term perspective (e.g., based on traffic forecast). We argue instead that this mechanism can be exploited to save power in the HetNet: in fact, during ABSs, the macro consumes less power, since it only transmits pilot signals. Dually, the micros may inhibit data transmission themselves in some subframes, and optimally decide when to do this based on knowledge of the ABS period. This allows us to define a power saving framework that works in the short term, modifying the ABS pattern at the fastest possible pace, serving the HetNet traffic at reduced power cost. Our framework is designed using only standard signaling. Simulations show that the algorithm consumes less power than its competitors, especially at low loads, and improves the UE QoS.

Two-tier cellular networks in which small cells are overlaid with macro-cells have attracted considerable attention because these networks are expected to accommodate the rapidly increasing mobile traffic. Enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) has also been proposed to further enhance the overall system performance by offloading more macro-cell users to small cells. Even with this approach, it is likely that macro-cell users are effectively offloaded to the small cells in the network because of the following reasons: i) some macro-cell users are offloaded to small cells by simply comparing their received signal strengths, and ii) the almost blank subframe (ABS) in the small cell is strictly assigned to users who experience strong interference from its nearby macro-cells. In this paper, we propose a load balance scheme for improving the downlink network-wide proportional fairness (PF) for two-tier cellular networks using eICIC. In particular, employing a cumulative distribution function-based scheduling scheme that supports sharing ABS across all users in each small cell, the proposed scheme recursively combines i) the user association between the cells and ii) ABS rate adaptation to improve the network PF. Through system-level simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme noticeably improves the network PF compared to the eICIC scheme regardless of the number of macro-cell users offloaded to small cells.
