Mobility simulations are an effective tool to forecast the effects of transportation policies. They are a useful part of decision support systems for policy makers. Big real-estate projects, aiming at creating whole new neighborhoods for instance, need this kind of applications to estimate their impacts on the surrounding environment. The potential visits of the various equipments and the public spaces of the new neighborhood can also be estimated with this kind of tools. In this context, agent-based simulation is a relevant model for the design and implementation of transportation applications, that represents travelers individually, together with their perception model of the environment and their internal decision processes. In this paper, we propose a multi-agent activity-based simulation to represent current and future mobility patterns in a city, with or without a new neighborhood. We describe the inputs of the simulation, in terms of networks and travel demand, the behaviors of the agents and the outputs on the laVallée project (France). The first series of experiments demonstrate the potential of the simulation and its benefits for the project managers and the decision-makers in the concerned territories.

Traffic simulations exist in multiple scales and each of these scales presents some advantages and is useful in certain contexts. Usually, multi-agent simulations use more detailed models and give more precise results than macroscopic models but their high calculation cost does not allow them to simulate very big areas such as an entire region. To overcome these limitations, multi-scale simulations emerged with the coupling of two or more simulations of different scales. This paper presents a generic solution to combine a macroscopic simulator working on a large area which contains a smaller area simulated by a multi-agent simulator. The main challenge is to assure the coherence between both simulators on the smallest area since it is simulated by both simulators at the same time. We first highlight the issues to tackle and the problems to solve when coupling two existing simulators then we propose solutions for the coupling, and finally evaluate them on an example scenario.

Space-time clustering-based method to optimize shareability in real-time ride-sharing

Real-time ride-sharing has become popular in recent years. However, the underlying optimization problem for this service is highly complex. One of the most critical challenges when solving the problem is solution quality and computation time, especially in large-scale problems where the number of received requests is huge. In this paper, we rely on an exact solving method to ensure the quality of the solution, while using AI-based techniques to limit the number of requests that we feed to the solver. More precisely, we propose a clustering method based on a new shareability function to put the most shareable trips inside separate clusters. Previous studies only consider Spatio-temporal dependencies to do clustering on the mobility service requests, which is not efficient in finding the shareable trips. Here, we define the shareability function to consider all the different sharing states for each pair of trips. Each cluster is then managed with a proposed heuristic framework in order to solve the matching problem inside each cluster. As the method favors sharing, we present the number of sharing constraints to allow the service to choose the number of shared trips. To validate our proposal, we employ the proposed method on the network of Lyon city in France, with half-million requests in the morning peak from 6 to 10 AM. The results demonstrate that the algorithm can provide high-quality solutions in a short time for large-scale problems. The proposed clustering method can also be used for different mobility service problems such as car-sharing, bike-sharing, etc.
