Multi-stakeholder perspectives on indicators for sustainable maintenance performance in production contexts: an exploratory study

Abstract: PurposePoor maintenance management leads to non-negligible economic, environmental and social impacts and obstacles to the sustainable manufacturing paradigm. Studies evaluating maintenance impacts on sustainability underline growing interest in the topic, but reports on the industrial field are lacking. Therefore, this paper investigates the industrial environment and the indicators that manufacturing companies use for measuring their maintenance impacts.Design/methodology/approachIn this pilot survey study, … Show more

“…Indeed, manufacturing companies are facing several challenges, such as physical resource depletion, stricter laws and regulations, economic stagnation, and customers' demand for higher product quality (Franciosi, Voisin, Miranda, Riemma & Iung, 2020). The sustainable manufacturing paradigm has attracted a great deal of interest in the last years as an approach that aims to empower companies to cope with these challenges (Eslami, Dassisti, Lezoche & Panetto, 2019) and all business functions and services, such as production, internal and external logistic (Di Pasquale, Nenni & Riemma, 2020;Fahimnia, Sarkis, & Davarzani, 2015) and maintenance processes (Franciosi, Di Pasquale, Iannone & Miranda, 2020), must be involved in this transformation in order to contribute to the sustainable operations.…”

“…Nowadays, manufacturing industries are addressing several challenges aimed at reaching new economic, environmental and social goals to achieve sustainable production processes (Eslami, Dassisti, Lezoche & Panetto, 2019;Franciosi, Voisin, Miranda, Riemma & Iung, 2020). To this end, several studies have explored the trends and research challenges in sustainable manufacturing and examined how rethinking business processes contributes to the sustainable performance of manufacturing firms (Franciosi, Di Pasquale, Iannone & Miranda, 2020;Garetti & Taisch, 2012). These studies are a necessary step in contributing to the circular economy (CE) paradigm.…”

“…According to [7][8][9][10], the success of sustainable manufacturing processes in improving economic, social and environmental performance can be achieved through their integration with maintenance activities. Reference [7] pointed out that "maintenance as part of the circular economy can be considered, first, as an enabling system to sustain the artefact throughout its life cycle, then as a key tool to keep the regeneration potential of this artefact, and finally, as a target system that must be sustainable".…”
