Different countries face diverse challenges for Conservation Agriculture (CA) development. The main purpose of this study was to examine the challenges of applying CA in Iran from the perspective of experts and farmers. A focus group method was used to investigate the challenges. The research sample consisting of farmers and experts of CA in different provinces includes those 19 experts and 15 farmers. Inductive content analysis and coding (open, axial, and selective coding) were employed to analyze the farmers’ and experts’ discussions. The findings showed that the challenges of applying CA in the studied provinces could be divided into 6 general categories: institutional-infrastructure (7 concepts), economic (5 concepts), training-research (2 concepts), environmental (4 concepts), mechanization (2 concepts), and cognitive (2 concepts) challenges. The economic and institutional-infrastructure challenges were the most frequent related to applying CA. It can be concluded that to solve the challenges of applying CA, it is necessary to link various sectors of government (the Ministry of Agriculture), education and research (Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization), and industry together. But farmers themselves are also a major contributor to meet the challenges of CA development through participation in planning CA project and training-extension programs. Therefore, farmers’ communities should also pave the way for a transition from conventional agriculture to CA with their participation.

The copula functions are frequently used by researchers for modeling dependence structure among the correlated attributes in many areas. The copulas are widely used for the analysis of drought frequency, drought characteristics, drought coincidence risk, uncertainty, and drought forecasting. In this research, we have compared two indices of drought assessment, including SPI‐12 and copula‐based joint deficit index (JDI). In this regard, the drought characteristics, including the severity, duration, and drought frequency have been studied in 25 synoptic stations of Iran during the 1968–2014. The results showed that, unlike JDI, the SPI‐12 is not able to estimate the drought peak during the critical and extreme condition. Although JDI has identified a severe and extreme drought during the pervasive drought, the SPI‐12 estimated a normal condition. The results show that JDI accurately estimates the drought frequency, but the SPI‐12 provided an unexpected estimation is some stations. In addition, the MannKendal trend test for drought characteristics represents that JDI accurately estimates the expected trend (an increasing trend) whereas the SPI‐12 exhibits no significant trend in most stations. Finally, JDI provides a comprehensive assessment of drought for decision‐makers and natural managers.

Human response to wildlife management is widespread, encompassing both human–wildlife conflicts and wildlife conservation, in different places and at different times. As people become increasingly aware of the importance of wildlife to biological and environmental sustainability, newspapers can be important sources of information, especially in developing countries, such as Iran. Three major Iranian daily newspapers were analysed for news items related to wildlife. Over the 7-year study period, 434 articles presented environmental news, of which 61 items referred to wildlife. Each wildlife item was recorded in terms of message, contributor, spatiality, and allocated space. Structure query language (SQL) was used to analyse relationships between the 915 fields/entries. Wildlife items were characterised by public awareness (51%), columnist contributions (46%), and local spatiality (43%). Most items (82%) were allocated space of less than half a page. Of the categorised topics, those of combined endangered land (30%) and marine (5%) species exceeded items on global conservation (24%). Results highlighted the minimal number and small space devoted to wildlife news items and their concentrations (67%) in one of the three sampled newspapers. Although nature has historically been important in Iranian culture, current attitudes to wildlife, as reflected in newspaper coverage, do not seem to mirror these traditional perspectives. Given the widespread distribution of newspapers and their roles (i.e., as sources of information and opinion influencers), global wildlife conservation issues would benefit from much greater coverage in the daily press.
