Multi-Stage Ion Acceleration in Laser Plasma Interaction

Abstract: A remarkable ion energy control is demonstrated by several-stage post-acceleration in a laser plasma interaction. Intense short-pulse laser generates a strong current by high-energy electrons accelerated. The strong electric current creates a strong magnetic field. During the increase phase of the magnetic field, the longitudinal inductive electric field is induced for the forward ion acceleration. The inductive acceleration and the target-normal sheath acceleration in the multi stages provide a unique control… Show more

“…In order to pre-accelerate the protons to relativistic speeds in the RPA stage, however, an ultraintense laser pulse (≥ 10 22 W/cm 2 ) is usually required, which would crucially postpone the realization of this scheme in experiments. In addition to the RPA-LWFA hybrid scheme, it was also proposed to enhance the ion energies and/or the ion beam qualities in laser-driven ion acceleration by using some multi-stage schemes [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33] or phase-matched scheme 34 .…”

“…In addition to individual acceleration schemes, some hybrid schemes [13][14][15] or cascaded 2 schemes [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] have also been proposed for enhancing the ion energies in laser-driven ion acceleration. Recently, the efficient generation of protons with energies exceeding 94 MeV by a combination of the RPA and TNSA mechanisms has been demonstrated in the experiment 15 .…”
