Use of technology for learning for blind children. One of the main gaps is the availability and accessibility of this technology in the school environment. Not all schools have adequate infrastructure or financial support to implement technology effectively. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with triangulation techniques in data collection to provide an in-depth description of the learning process evaluation for blind students at SLB 1 Makassar. The data collection technique involved four blind students and four teachers who were also blind, selected through purposive sampling. The Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) approach developed by Stufflebeam was used as the framework. This research focuses specifically on evaluating the learning process. Unique dynamics in the blind class at SLB 1 Makassar, where teachers and students face blind disabilities. The presence of teachers who are also blind, especially those with total blindness, creates a learning environment full of empathy and mutual understanding. The Be My Eyes, Voice Dream Reader, and Blind Square applications contribute significantly to the inclusive education of blind children at SLB 1 Makassar. With the help of this application, it is possible to increase the independence of blind children in learning, especially science learning.

Severe visual impairment and blindness significantly affect a person’s quality of life, leading sometimes to social anxiety. Nevertheless, instead of concentrating on a person’s inability, we could focus on their capacities and on their other senses, which in many cases are more developed. On the other hand, the technical evolution that we are witnessing is able to provide practical means that can reduce the effects that blindness and severe visual impairment have on a person’s life. In this context, this article proposes a novel wearable solution that has the potential to significantly improve blind person’s quality of life by providing personal assistance with the help of Visible Light Communications (VLC) technology. To prevent the wearable device from drawing attention and to not further emphasize the user’s deficiency, the prototype has been integrated into a smart backpack that has multiple functions, from localization to obstacle detection. To demonstrate the viability of the concept, the prototype has been evaluated in a complex scenario where it is used to receive the location of a certain object and to safely travel towards it. The experimental results have: i. confirmed the prototype’s ability to receive data at a Bit-Error Rate (BER) lower than 10−7; ii. established the prototype’s ability to provide support for a 3 m radius around a standard 65 × 65 cm luminaire; iii. demonstrated the concept’s compatibility with light dimming in the 1–99% interval while maintaining the low BER; and, most importantly, iv. proved that the use of the concept can enable a person to obtain information and guidance, enabling safer and faster way of traveling to a certain unknown location. As far as we know, this work is the first one to report the implementation and the experimental evaluation of such a concept.

Though most people are capable of performing many tasks regardless of cognitive or physical challenges, some individuals, especially those with visual impairments, must rely on others to perform even basic tasks. The chance of them interacting with a computing device is minimal, except for speech recognition technology, which is quite complicated. Additionally, it has become apparent that mainstream devices are gaining more acceptance among people with vision problems compared to traditional assistive devices. To address this, we developed the Haptic Braille Keyboard Android application to help vision-impaired users interact more easily with devices such as smartphones and tablets. The academic novelty of the application lies in its customization capabilities, which maximize the Quality of Experience for the user. The application allows users to place the Braille buttons in their desired layout for convenience. Users can move and position the virtual buttons on the screen to create a layout for text entry based on the Braille writing system. For this purpose, we conducted extensive testing and experimentation to determine which of the two commonly used Braille layouts is most user-friendly. This work can help visually impaired users interact with smartphones and tablets more easily and independently, making communication less challenging.
