Multi‐scale description of a Sahelian synoptic weather system representative of the West African monsoon

Abstract: SUMMARYA reference case of a Sahelian weather system observed during the Hydrological Atmospheric Pilot Experiment, HAPEX-SAHEL, in August 1992, is described from a seasonal viewpoint as well as from synoptic and convective system viewpoints. It is shown that the case-study is representative of the climatology at all these scales and presents many interacting scales and physical processes. At intraseasonal scale, the monsoon onset is characterized by an abrupt shift of precipitation together with a latitudinal… Show more

“…The northward shift of the precipitation maximum supplies a majority of precipitation (Laurent et al, 1998;Mathon et al, 2002) to normally arid continental African regions, such as the Sahel, where mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) are responsible for the majority (> 80%) of rainfall totals (Le Barbé and Lebel, 1997;D'Amato and Lebel, 1998;Laurent et al, 1998;Redelsperger et al, 2002;Fink et al, 2006).…”

“…Rainfall in West Africa is primarily associated with MCSs (Le Barbé and Lebel, 1997;Diongue et al, 2002;Redelsperger et al, 2002;Fink et al, 2006). Due to the scarcity of radar and hourly rainfall data, most studies of mesoscale precipitation in Africa used satellite IR or passive microwave data (e.g.…”

“…Our understanding of AEWs remains founded on climatological studies which are limited by the upper-air network, with only a handful of detailed casestudies available (e.g. Redelsperger et al, 2002;Berry and Thorncroft, 2005). In reality, there are wide differences in the structure of individual AEWs within a given season which do not adhere to the climatological composites.…”
