“…Central Europe was permanently dusty (Sirocko et al, 2005(Sirocko et al, , 2013Seelos et al, 2009 controlled not only by atmospheric dust abundance but also by different local trapping, geomorphic and preservation conditions. This is a significant limiting factor for continuous loess deposition, as well as for suitable reconstruction of climatic and environmental dynamics.…”

“…The Eifel volcanism started in the Hocheifel during the Eocene about 50 Ma ago, while the volcanic activity in the West Eifel started at~700-600 ka and in the East Eifel at~460 ka (Schmincke, 2007). The most recent activity occurred at Ulmener Maar (West Eifel) 11,000 a BP (Zolitschka et al, 1995;Sirocko et al, 2013). The WEVF (~600 km 2 ) is limited by the Booser maars to the northeast, the towns of Bad Bertrich to the south, and Ormont to the northwest.…”

“…The Ulmener Maar is the result of the youngest eruption in Germany (11,000 a BP) according to calibrated 14 C dating (Sirocko et al, 2013) and corrected varve chronology (Zolitschka et al, 1995). The up to 7.5 m thick deposit was logged on the western rim of the UM crater, in a road cut along the Cochemer Strasse north of the church of Ulmen, 80 m south of highway A48 (Appendix A).…”

“…Lake Holzmaar was considered suitable, because a number of (palaeo-) limnology studies have been conducted (Raubitschek et al, 1999;Zolitschka et al, 2000;Baier et al, 2004;Sirocko, 2009;Messyasz et al, 2012) and the sedimentary organic matter characterized . Furthermore, a high precision multi-proxy dating for the actual sediment core used in this study has been published (Sirocko et al, 2013). The sediments cover the entire Holocene and date further back to Bølling-Allerød interstadial (13,650 years BP).…”
