Multi probes measurements at the PALS Facility Research Centre during high intense laser pulse interactions with various target materials

Abstract: Abstract. During the interaction of high intense laser pulse with solid target, a large amount of hot electrons is produced and a giant Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is generated due to the current flowing into the system target-target holder, as well as due to the escaping charged particles in vacuum. EMP production for different target materials is investigated inside and outside the target chamber, using monopole antenna, super wide-band microstrip antenna and Moebius antenna. The EMP consists in a fast trans… Show more

“…Hot electrons and the target current are the two distinct sources of EMPs. [4,5] The intensity and distribution of EMPs are strongly related to the laser energy, [6,7] laser duration, [8,9] target size, [10] target shape, [11,12] target thickness, [13] target materials [14][15][16] and target holder. [17] All these critical factors give rise to significant influences on target polarization, potential barrier and hot electrons escaping, which in turn affect the generation of EMPs.…”

“…A set of results obtained under these conditions is described in [24]. Measurements appear to be generally dependent on laser-target interaction in terms of laser energy, intensity and target material, but more investigations are needed to fully understand it.…”

“…Indeed, PALS was notorious for high EMP levels. The EMP amplitudes at PALS were measured in a variety of experimental arrangements [13,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] using loop probes, monopole antenna, a planar super-wideband antenna and a horn antenna. These measurements provided valuable qualitative insight into the EMP characteristics at PALS laser parameters.…”
