“…The degree of removal was lower than that of previous load. At the eleventh day, the four curves were very close, increasing the load of the organic substances required longer HRT to reach the degradation [7].…”

“…High protein content in soybean affects the characteristics of the wastewater, with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) (10-20 g/L), and biological oxygen demand (BOD) values [2]. Some researchers have conducted wastewater treatment using ABR with different number of baffles, which are: Boopathy [3] with 2, 3, and 4 baffles, Feng et al [4] with 6 baffles, Krishna et al [5] with 8 baffles, Ghaniyari-Benis et al [6] with 3 baffles, Ahamed et al [7] with 2 baffle, Hahn et al [8] with 4 baffles, Aqaneghad et al [9] with 5 baffles, and Gulhane et al [10] with 3 baffles. The number of baffles in the ABR provides better physical contacts between the wastewater and the activated sludge.…”

“…Besides two-phase systems, multi-phased anaerobic baffled reactor (MP-ABR) operation on a pilot scale is also demonstrated. A MP-ABR performance was evaluated with FW as the substrate for biogas production for a period of 175 d [87]. With a HRT of 30 d, when the four-chambered ABR was operated with an OLR of 0.5-1.0 g-VS/L d, removal efficiencies of 85.3% (COD total ), 94.5% (COD soluble ), 89.6% (VFA) and 86.4% (VS) were reported to be achieved for the generation of biogas at 215.57 mL/g-VS removed d. These pilot scale studies clearly demonstrates the commercialization feasibility of FW to bioenergy technology, and suggests for suitable framework and policy making towards deployment of such technologies.…”

“…By using different compartments, the different phases of AD can be separated, i. e. the acidogenesis takes place in the first compartments, while the acetogenesis and methanogenesis steps occur place in the later compartments and at different pH [31]. Additional advantages with such systems are the simple and robust design without any moving parts [32] and good shock loading resistance [33].…”
