“…Liu et al also demonstrated that melatonin ameliorated the elevated TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, iNOS, and COX‐2 levels and decreased the apoptotic cells in hypoxic rats 39 . Gulle et al suggested that melatonin decreased periodontal inflammation caused by lipopolysaccharide in rats with DM 40 . In contrast, in the present study although there was a slight increase, no significant change in IL‐1β or iNOS levels in rats with DM or any positive effect of melatonin on these parameters was observed.…”

“…Various experimental periodontitis models have been proposed in the extant literature (27)(28)(29)47). Ligatures placed in the dentogingival area increase plaque formation and the amount of bacteria, and induce effective plaque-host interactions (43,48).…”

“…Several studies have provided evidence of the positive contributions of melatonin and its physiological and pathological implications in the oral cavity (24)(25)(26)(27). Gülle et al (27) reported that melatonin ameliorated periodontal inflammation-induced organ injuries in rats.…”

“…A cross-sectional study has demonstrated that topical application of melatonin on gingival tissues has a favorable effect on preventing the periodontal disease [12]. In vivo studies were successfully performed with melatonin in periodontal disease models indicating that melatonin could exert protective and preventive effects [1315]. Choi et al reported that melatonin inhibited Prevotella intermedia LPS-induced inflammation [16].…”
