Multi-objective optimal design and seismic assessment of an inerter-based hybrid control system for storage tanks

Abstract: In this paper, a hybrid control system (HCS) endowing a base isolation system (BIS) with a Tuned Mass Damper Inerter (TMDI) is proposed for the protection of steel storage tanks from severe structural damages induced by seismic events. Among all the components of industrial plants, cylindrical steel storage tanks are widely spread and play a primary role when subjected to seismic hazard, since they suffer of many critical issues related to their dynamic response such as high convective wave height and base she… Show more

“…For instance, Rawat and Mastagar investigated the application of oblate spheroid base isolators on the seismic response of tanks [136,137]. Some other researchers studied the application of different arrangements of inerter base isolators to control the seismic response of liquid storage tanks [138][139][140][141]. In addition, several other researchers have focused on utilizing various types of dampers on base-isolated liquid storage tanks [142][143][144][145].…”

“…The viscous mass damper has an inerter and an inner tube coated with viscous fluid connected with a ball screw. Another hybrid control system with base isolation and TMDI was proposed by Labaf et al (2022) for mitigating seismic-induced severe structural damage of steel storage tanks. A comparative vibration control study of the base-isolated water tank equipped with linear viscous damper, viscous mass damper and negative stiffness damper subjected to seismic isolation was carried out by Zhu et al (2023).…”

“…Indeed, some proposals for monitoring have already been made in [18], so models that describe the horizontal dynamics of the roof would be used to estimate some risk thresholds for the activation of early warning systems. In addition, some efforts have already been made in the field of passive seismic protection of industrial components [19], and in particular of the floating roof by Zahedin Labaf et al in [20], in which a hybrid control system is proposed, where a base isolation system is equipped with a tuned mass damper inerter. This system was experimentally tested in [21].…”
