Multi-Mycotoxin Occurrence in Dairy Cattle and Poultry Feeds and Feed Ingredients from Machakos Town, Kenya

Abstract: Mycotoxins are common in grains in sub-Saharan Africa and negatively impact human and animal health and production. This study assessed occurrences of mycotoxins, some plant, and bacterial metabolites in 16 dairy and 27 poultry feeds, and 24 feed ingredients from Machakos town, Kenya, in February and August 2019. We analyzed the samples using a validated multi-toxin liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. A total of 153 mycotoxins, plant, and bacterial toxins, were detected in the samples. All t… Show more

“…The high occurrence of Fusarium metabolites found in the present study coincided with the findings of Nichea et al in pastures collected in Argentina [ 45 , 46 ]. This corroborates once again the status of Fusarium as one of the most widespread fungal species in crops-growing areas of the planet and as a significant contributor to mycotoxin contamination in animal feeds [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. Several Fusarium spp.…”

“…Its main pathogenic route is the induction of hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of cancer with a high mortality rate. This molecule is also teratogenic, genotoxic, and cytotoxic for many types of cells [6,7]. AFB1 is immune-toxic [8], and exposure to it has been closely related to impaired growth in children, including stunting and wasting [9].…”

“…Concerning recent occurrence studies about EAs, although the occurrence of main mycotoxins in feed has been extensively studied around the world, 23–26 only a few of these works included EAs 19,26,27 . Moreover, most of the papers including the determination of EAs are focused on cereal grains, 14,28–34 with the inclusion of processed feeds being scarce 19,26,27 .…”
